How do you make your own lighter?

There are a few ways that you can make your own lighter from scratch, all of which will come in handy if you are stuck without a regular lighter in the wilds.

For instance, did you know that you can make a lighter just out of a battery and some foil, or even with a pencil grip? How crazy is that?

Thankfully, we are here to show you exactly how you can do this, and what you will need to make your own lighter yourself.

How to make a lighter- step by step guide

The two methods we are going to show you are both simple and easy to do.

Whichever one you choose will most likely depend on the objects that you have lying around to help you.

How to Make a Lighter with a Battery

For this method to work, you are going to need an AA alkaline battery, and a newer one will work best.

If you can, then use two batteries if possible, depending on what you have available.

Once you have your batteries, you will need to get some aluminum foil.

Then, you are going to need to cut small strips of the foil, large enough so that it is a centimeter wide and about three inches long.

This is important, as it will need to form a little bridge over the battery. You may have to practice this part, as a bridge that is too small will burn up easily and can break apart, but one too large might not catch.

With this method, you will have a flame quickly, but if you want to keep the flame, you will need a source that you can transfer the flame to before it burns out. These could be dry leaves if you are camping, or little sheets of newspaper if you want to make a fire.

Whichever transfer source you choose, it is fine, just make sure you have one so that the battery itself does not light on fire, as this is highly hazardous.

Next, you will need to find the negative and positive ends of the battery, which should be labeled as + for positive, and - for negative. When the time comes that you need the flame, wrap one end of the foil onto the negative side of the battery, and then carefully wrap the other end of the foil onto the positive end and poof!

You should have flame ready to go!

How to Make a Lighter with a Pencil Grip

To make a lighter with a pencil grip, you are going to of course need a pencil grip, but you will also need some tin foil.

The first step in this method is to plug up one end of the pencil grip with the tin foil ball completely. You will probably benefit from using a foam pencil grip that is about an inch and a half long in size for the best results.

Next, you will need a little bit of cotton for this to work. With the cotton, you are going to want to tear away little pieces and also form them into small little balls.

These balls should be about the size of some peas, before you move onto the next step. The following step is to put a small layer of Vaseline or petroleum jelly between each piece. This is because as the jelly heats up, the fumes will become combustible, which will help with your homemade lighter!

Then, you are going to need to place the cotton balls inside the gripper, by inserting them into the open end of your pencil grip. Push the balls all the way down into the grip until the whole tube is full of them.

For the next step, you are going to need a small paperclip. With your fingers, you are going to want to straighten out the paper clip and then place it a ¼ of the way down into the pencil grip at the side where the tin foil was placed.

Next, push and squeeze the paperclip along the pencil grip, so that it is between the grip and the ball of foil. Then, grab two small rubber bands, and wrap them around the pencil grip tightly. Try to wrap them a centimeter apart on either edge of the grip for the best results.

Finally, you will need to wrap the pencil grip entirely with foil from the top to the bottom, and again secure the foil around the grip with some rubber bands. Then, you can use a match to light your homemade lighter, holding it at the bottom of the paperclip.

With our easy guide, you can make your own homemade lighter in a matter of minutes.

Just remember to always be cautious when dealing with flames, and use gloves as protection if possible.
